Clinical Medicine/Research Fellow

The American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine (AUC) is currently recruiting Clinical Medicine Teaching and Research Fellows for the Fall 2010 semester and beyond.  This newly created position is designed for AUC M.D. graduates awaiting residency placement who wish to extend their clinical medicine teaching and basic sciences research portfolio.  Basic Science research opportunities include supervised experiences in all the disciplines including Anatomy, Molecular & Cellular Biology, Physiology, Microbiology/Immunology, Pathology, and Behavioral Sciences/Clinical Medicine.

Job Title: Clinical Medicine Teaching/Research Fellow
Department: Behavioral Science and Clinical Medicine (BCM)
Reporting Line:  All Fellows will report to a Faculty Mentor in the Department of Behavioral and Clinical Medicine as well as to a Faculty Mentor in a Basic Sciences Department as assigned by the Chairperson of Department of Behavioral and Clinical Medicine.  Assignments will be based upon interests of Fellow and University need.
Qualifications: Recent M.D. graduate typically awaiting residency placement or an M.D. involved in residency training on an approved leave of absence.  Familiarity working with medical students in clinical settings  and familiarity with US evaluation mechanisms. (NBME, USMLE I and II) and experience with some of AUC’s clinical education placements.  Confident, self-starter with outstanding ability to role-model professional skills and attitudes to medical students.
Duties: Assist the Chair of BCM in providing a multi-modular, multi-semester offering that would consist of topics dealing with communication skills, doctor-patient relationship, ethics, physical diagnosis, pathophysiology of disease, use of Harvey and other simulators, use of standardized patients, public health/epidemiology etc.  Responsibilities include facilitating small group learning in which physical examination and interviewing skills are developed.  The Fellow will also serve as an evaluator in practical examinations in which students are directly observed as they interview and examine simulated patients.

Depending on research interests, the Fellow will be assigned a faculty mentor from a Basic Sciences area and will conduct a research project under their supervision.  It is expected that they will prepare presentations related to their research suitable for an abstract or oral presentation at a recognized medical meeting and that they will serve as an additional teaching resource in the Department where they are conducting research.  Such teaching may include preparing or delivering some lectures, facilitating small-group discussion sections as appropriate, and interfacing with the course tutor to support the learning of medical students, or duties as assigned.

All Fellows are expected to serve as resources and advocates for students with questions regarding the NBME subject exams, USMLE-Step I, II  process, ERAS registration, and match process, and the clinical portion of their training in the US or the UK.  This may include periodic group presentations and meetings, active participation in University life and contribution to the mission of the University as determined by their Behavioral and Clinical Medicine Mentor.

Remuneration: Compensation will be 35 k per annum with paid health insurance benefits and either University housing provided or an additional 12k housing allowance per annum and two weeks vacation.  If research is accepted for presentation at international, national or regional conference, a $2500.00 stipend to underwrite the expenses of travel will be provided as additional compensation.

Work Schedule:  Minimum of 40 hours per week with a 5 day a week work commitment.  Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as needed.  Must maintain minimal posted office hours to be determined by Clinical Medicine and Basic Sciences mentors. Ideally, commitment must be made to serve the University for at least two semesters with the opportunity to renew for a third semester.
