Study Medicine and Practice in Canada
With every year, increasing numbers of our Canadian neighbors discover that AUC is the place to be if they want to pursue a career in medicine. In 2009, Canadians comprised 9 percent of the incoming class -- a four percent increase from 2008. That figure is expected to to grow further because our Canadian graduates are successfully matching into residency programs and continuing on to practice medicine in Canada as well as the United States.
Below you will find information on financial aid, clinical rotations, and residency and licensure in Canada. Please contact the Office of Admissions or Office of Clinical Student Affairs for more information.

Clinical Rotations in Canada
AUC’s clinical curriculum is comprised of 72 weeks of rotations that include 42 weeks of core clerkships and 30 weeks of electives. Core clerkships are completed at affiliated sites located in the United States and United Kingdom. During the 4th year, students have the opportunity to engage in elective rotations at various sites in the United States and abroad. AUC students may also complete elective assignments at eligible teaching sites in Canada. Eligibility is determined by one of the following criteria:
- The site has a University Affiliation (an LCME-accredited Allopathic School of Medicine) and rotates students from that institution.
- The site has an accredited residency program in the subject area of the elective rotation.
The following list includes some of the Canadian educational sites where AUC students have recently completed elective rotations:
Dalhousie University - Faculty of Medicine (Halifax, Nova Scotia)
McGill University - Facultie of Medicine (Montreal, Quebec)
McMaster University - Faculty of Health Sciences (Hamilton, Ontario)

Residency and Licensure in Canada
The Canadian Information Centre for International Medical Graduates provides helpful information and an outline of procedures for obtaining residency and licensure in Canada.
The Canadian Resident Matching Service (CaRMS) and IMG-specific programs are the main points of access into postgraduate training.
Graduates from AUC are eligible to apply for the Canadian Resident Matching Service (CaRMS).
To be eligible to participate in the CaRMS you must be either a medical student or graduate having obtained or obtaining a medical degree by July 1 of the match year from:
- A school accredited by the LCME/CACMS (Liaison Committee on Medical Education / Committee on Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools)
- A school of osteopathic medicine
- An international medical school
Applicants applying to the match who are not from LCME/CACMS-accredited schools must be attending or have graduated from a school listed with the International Medical Education Directory (IMED), as published by the Foundation for the Advancement of International Medical Education and Research (FAIMER), and
- Must have written and passed the Medical Council of Canada Evaluating Examination (MCCEE); or
- Be scheduled to write the September or November* 2008 MCCEE **
* CaRMS does not guarantee that the results for the November MCCEE will be available before the end of the First Iteration. If the results are not available by February 26, 2009, the applicant will be withdrawn from the Match.
** Important Note for the 2009 Match: In order to qualify for the First Iteration of the 2009 match, applicants will need to have written the MCCEE in 2008 or before. Applicants scheduled for the January 2009 MCCEE will be able to register for the Second Iteration of the match.
DISCLAIMER: The above-mentioned criteria are the basic requirements to allow you to participate in CaRMS. Additional criteria may apply, depending on the position and province.
Note that almost all jurisdictions require that applicants applying to provincial Ministries of Health- funded positions are Canadian Citizens or Permanent Residents.
Please ensure that you have read the information provided under Provincial Restrictions, in order to meet all necessary requirements when applying for the programs of your choice.

Tips from a Canadian AUC Graduate:
- Do research on programs that interest you
- Join student organizations that are specific to specialties you would like to practice
- Try to stay organized and prepared
- Stay informed with the rules and regulations, as they tend to change from year to year
- Be aware of what you want but also try to remain flexible and open to other options
- Doing elective rotations and having medical experience in Canada is definitely a plus (and helps you obtain references from program directors)
- Community service/humanitarian work while in Basic Sciences is a plus. It's important to show you're not just a student (a critical point with program directors)
- Demonstrate that you are a well-rounded individual
