Assisting Students with On-Campus and Off-Campus Housing

American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine (AUC) housing takes great pride in assisting students in finding housing that is safe, comfortable, and conducive to study.

Study in Paradise at AUC’s Sint Maarten Campus

Our Sint Maarten campus overlooks the beautiful Simpson Bay Lagoon and is adjacent to the 18-hole championship Mullet Bay Golf Course and Mullet Bay Beach. Our campus location enables students and their families to access stunning beaches, excellent diving, sailing, and sports activities, and countless local markets and duty-free shopping.

Students have the option to live on-campus or off-campus. No matter where you choose to live, you’ll want to ensure that your environment is conducive to the rigors of medical school. AUC’s Department of Housing and Residential Life will help you find the place that’s right for you.

AUC On-Campus Housing

Benefits to Living on Campus

Convenience is a prime benefit to living on campus at AUC. Students who choose to live in one of the 80 furnished apartment units on campus have easy access to such AUC resources and amenities as the on-campus gym, basketball court, and WiFi. Campus living also offers students the chance to interact with like-minded peers from a wide variety of cultures and backgrounds from across the globe to form a unique community experience that is difficult to replicate off campus. Relax without the worries that conventional housing can entail and concentrate on being a student instead.

Units are equipped with air-conditioning and a complimentary WiFi connection. On each floor, there are laundry facilities—and spectacular views. On-campus housing building structures are constructed with reinforced concrete. Units are also equipped with hurricane shutters to withstand a category 5 storm.

On-campus housing is monitored by AUC security personnel. The on-campus apartments are located adjacent to the academic building, providing easy access to the offices of instructors and academic advisors.

On-campus housing assignments are made on a first-come, first-served basis. Student rooms are either single or double occupancy. Double rooms come with a balcony facing the lagoon and each room has its own private bathroom.

Housing Highlights Include:

  • Furnished apartments (dining room table/chairs, sofa, bed, desk/chair)
  • Spacious, fully equipped kitchen with refrigerator, stove, and microwave

AUC students can apply for on-campus housing here.

Off-Campus Housing

At some point during your time at AUC, you may choose to explore off-campus living options. While the potential to spread your wings and enjoy greater independence sounds exciting, the decision can be a bit overwhelming, especially if you are venturing out on your own for the first time. Choosing to live off campus will present a new set of variables and responsibilities. The good news is that AUC staff is available to help you make the transition easier and less stressful, whether you are a student seeking a place to live for just yourself or for an entire family with its own unique needs.

Experienced AUC housing representatives are extremely knowledgeable about St. Maarten and can suggest accommodations from an approved list of nearby off-campus living accommodations within our preferred neighborhoods of:

  • Beacon Hill
  • Cupecoy & Cupecoy Beach
  • Pelican Key
  • Simpson Bay
  • Point Pirouette

The office also manages a website that lists potential off-campus housing alternatives and roommates who are interested in sharing living expenses. You may also want to ask an upper-class student, who can be a trusted source for housing as well.

About 90 percent of the students who do not live on the AUC campus reside within walking distance to the medical school. By partnering with local stakeholders, AUC takes great strides to ensure that these students remain safe and connected to the campus community.

A complimentary shuttle service is available to transport students (7 a.m. - 3 p.m. daily) from the entrance of campus to residences in Cupecoy and Maho. For students who choose to drive to campus, a St. Maarten driver’s license can be obtained upon arrival on the island.

AUC students can browse an online database, find roommates, contact landlords, and initiate the lease process here.

Campus Security

AUC is committed to providing a secure and crime-free campus environment. Security awareness is an important part of our culture at AUC, and we encourage all students, faculty, and staff to accept responsibility for their own safety as well as the safety of others. The AUC Office of Safety and Security renders a 24/7 service and maintains ongoing communication with the police department of Sint Maarten. We closely monitor the campus as well as nearby residencies and neighborhoods using surveillance monitoring, bike patrols, K-9 service, and a shuttle service. We are also responsible for emergency response, campus vehicle registration, university ID badges, lost and found, and wellness checks.

Fitness & Recreational Facilities

AUC’s complimentary fitness center is centrally located and available to campus community members on a 24/7 basis, free of charge. Our open workout area features rubber flooring, cardio machines, strength training equipment, and weight racks and accessories. Students also enjoy access to two fitness rooms for group exercise, martial arts training, and open gym time. The campus recreation team is heavily invested in activities that promote students’ health and wellbeing. We maintain and regularly invest in new recreation spaces for AUC students, including on-campus basketball courts and nearby use of soccer fields and beach volleyball courts.
