Dr. Behrisch received his doctorate from the University of British Columbia in 1969. He served on the faculty at the Institute of Arctic Biology, University of Alaska from 1969 to 1984 and held grants from both NIH and NSF. During that time he had two sabbaticals, which he spent as a visiting professor at the University of Innsbruck (Austria) and visiting researcher at the Wenner-Gren Institute, University of Stockholm (Sweden).

He founded and ran his own biological firm for ten years. His research interests lie in the search for new bioactive compounds as well as regulation and integration of metabolism and molecular mechanisms of adaptation to environmental change. He is a member of the American Society of Biological Chemists, American Physiological Society, and Canadian Physiological Society. He previously held an appointment at Ross University School of Medicine. He joined the AUC faculty in September 2001 and is teaching biochemistry.
