MSPE Letters

Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE) letters are submitted in support of your residency and fellowship applications through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). The ECFMG can take up to 3 to 4 weeks to upload all of the documents. Therefore, your request for an MSPE letter along with all required items must be submitted to us between July and September in order to be on time for the November 1st release date by ECFMG. Important: all requests will be processed in the order received.

You will need to provide the following items with your request:

  • AAMC ID number
  • Grades on all USMLE exam(s) and/or the date that you are scheduled to sit for the USMLE Step II
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV) that must include all undergraduate schools attended, all degrees received with exact dates, pertinent medical and/or work experience, plus any memberships, honors, awards and publications.
  • IMPORTANT! Students have the opportunity to contribute to their MSPE by drafting a brief paragraph to be used in their “Unique Characteristics” section. Drafts submitted will be edited. List any significant experiences, such as work experience, leadership roles, and/or research obtained prior to entering medical school. Please include features of your academic or extra-academic record, which you feel will distinguish you from other applicants.
  • Remember, your MSPE is not a recommendation letter but rather an evaluation of your performance in medical school.

MSPE Letter Fees

  • Students      $10
  • Graduates   $15

ECFMG Forms

The following forms from ECFMG are available on their Web site (www.ecfmg.org/ERAS):

  • Document Submission Form
  • ERAS Fellowship Document Submission Form

NOTES:

  • Letters of recommendation should be on original letterhead, signed in blue ink, and sent directly to ERAS/ECFMG with the ERAS Document Submission Form
  • Students who participated in ERAS 2007 do not need to resubmit paperwork unless there is updated information. New letters of recommendation are required by ECFMG.
  • Photograph – Submitted directly on line via OASIS through ERAS

For more information, please visit the ECFMG Web site: www.ecfmg.org/eras

Failure to submit all documents together at one time will delay processing. Therefore, care should be taken when providing information so that it is as complete and accurate as possible. You may submit the documents by regular mail, fax or e-mail.

Licensure

Students will obtain licensure forms directly from the medical licensing board for the state the student desires to practice in. It is the student’s responsibility to check with the appropriate licensing body to ensure all requirements have been met for that specific state. Once completed, licensure forms are to be sent to MEAS (Attn: Mollie King) for processing along with the form’s destination address.

For most states there is no fee for processing the licensure forms. However, certain states (CA, MA, IL, PA) require a fee of $125, while other states’ fees may be more. It is the student’s responsibility to find out how much the fee is for the state of their choice. Please note that if a transcript is also required, the transcript request form must be submitted, along with an additional $10 for students and $15 for graduates.
