At American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine (AUC), every student is on his or her own personal medical school journey. But when our students graduate, that journey doesn’t necessarily end. It’s just a short respite before another one begins.
For many of our students, March 20, 2015—Match Day—marked the next leg of their journey into residency training. And everyone here at AUC is celebrating right along with them.
200+ AUC Students Earn Residencies
This year, 225 AUC graduates matched into a wide variety of residency programs across the United States. Our graduates earned residencies in specialties like child neurology, ophthalmology, general surgery, pediatrics, radiology, and emergency medicine.
In addition, many of our graduates earned spots in primary care programs, like internal or family medicine. We think that’s important: A recent study in the Annals of Family Medicine projects that the US will face a shortfall of 33,000 physicians by the time 2035 hits. By helping enable our graduates to place in primary care specialties, AUC is doing its part to fill this growing physician gap in the United States.
First-year residents will, under supervision, care for patients with a wide variety of conditions at their matched teaching hospitals in their selected specialties. AUC’s new batch of residents will start their training this coming July.

AUC Dean Remarks on Grads' Intelligence, Empathy
“Since I became dean of AUC, I’ve been struck by our students’ intelligence, empathy, and sheer commitment to becoming physicians,” says Heidi Chumley, MD, Executive Dean of AUC. “On Match Day, I hope everyone takes a moment to think, long and hard, about how far they’ve come since they enrolled here. You were outstanding students, you will be outstanding physicians, and we couldn’t be prouder of you.”
AUC’s new residents celebrated together at separate Match Day events at the AUC administrative offices in Coral Gables, FL; at Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow, NY; and Providence Hospital in Southfield, MI.
