Following an international search, American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine (AUC) has appointed Robert Hecht, MD, FACOG clinical dean for the United States.
Dr. Hecht has been a member of the AUC community for several years. He served as the OB/GYN Clerkship Director at Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center in New York from 2011-2014 and as the representative for OB/GYN on AUC’s Curriculum Committee from 2014-2015. In addition, he is currently AUC’s Clinical Chair for OB/GYN and a member of the Admissions Committee, both roles that he plans to continue. Throughout his academic career, he has played an active role in advancing AUC’s mission of providing an excellent medical education to qualified students of diverse backgrounds.
In his new role as Clinical Dean – US, which begins on January 19, 2016, Dr. Hecht will have educational and administrative oversight of the student experience during the clinical semesters at affiliated teaching hospitals across the US. He will work closely with AUC’s other deans, clinical chairs, and colleagues to facilitate student transitions into the clinical sciences and oversee all US clerkships and electives. He currently lives in Florida in relatively close proximity to the Coral Gables administrative offices.
He is a graduate of Amherst College. He earned his medical degree at Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons and completed his residency in Obstetrics & Gynecology (OB/GYN) at the New York Hospital - Cornell University Medical Center. After some time in private practice, he entered academic medicine in the New York area where he was on the faculty at AUC and Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He has served as the Medical Director and Senior Physician for Family Planning at the Florida Department of Health in Broward County. He is also an Affiliate Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine at Florida Atlantic University and was just appointed to the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG) District XII Committee on Health Care for Underserved Women.
