White Coat Ceremony
A tradition to welcome incoming MD students to American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine and the medical profession.
The White Coat Ceremony is a time-honored event that marks the official entrance of matriculating AUC students into medical school and the medical profession. In the presence of family and friends, students receive their first white coat—a symbol of bestowed trust to carry on the tradition of doctoring.

Robert Flannery, MD '06 will serve as keynote speaker for AUC’s May 2023 White Coat Ceremony.
Dr. Flannery, a graduate of AUC, arrived to St. Maarten in the fall of 2002 after earning his undergraduate degree from the University of Pittsburgh. During medical sciences, Dr. Flannery was inducted into the Phi Chi community service fraternity, participated in community screening clinics, and volunteered at the Multipurpose Organization benefiting St. Maarten’s orphanage. He graduated from AUC in 2006 and was awarded the Susan B. Atchley community service award.
Dr. Flannery completed his residency in Family Medicine at Excela Health in his hometown of Latrobe, Pennsylvania and later pursued a Sports Medicine fellowship at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. During fellowship, he was able to treat athletes from both Rutgers and Princeton University. Dr. Flannery spent three years in private practice in Birmingham, Alabama before moving to Cleveland, Ohio in 2016 to join University Hospitals as a Primary Care Sports Medicine Physician for the Department of Orthopedics. As part of the University Hospitals Sports Medicine Institute, he serves as Assistant Medical Physician for the Cleveland Browns, is a Team Physician for Oberlin College, and also provides care for multiple area high school athletes.
Each student will be photographed in their white coat and in front of the university’s emblem. Photographs will be uploaded and made available to all students after the event.
Directly following the ceremony, students and their guests are invited to attend a dinner reception at Port de Plaisance. Shuttle transportation will be provided to and from the university.
Due to Hurricane Irma, hotel space is limited in Sint Maarten. We encourage families to check for availability at Simpson Bay Resort & Marina, which is about a 15 minute drive from AUC's campus in Cupecoy and an 8 minute drive from the Princess Juliana Airport.
