Celebrating our graduates as newly minted physicians
Update on 2020 Commencement Plans
A message from Executive Dean, Dr. Heidi Chumley
The current environment has necessitated change in our lives, both personal and professional. These changes have been challenging, frustrating, and in a very real way, life changing.
Simultaneously, we have come to the point in your medical training, where your perseverance deserves to be celebrated. I, along with our entire faculty applaud your dedication to reaching this milestone. Congratulations, Doctor!
Unfortunately, that celebration will need to look different this year. We won’t be able to come together in person in May, as originally planned.
We have determined it is critical to cancel the May Commencement Ceremony. Walking across the stage and being hooded in front of your family and friends symbolizes the major accomplishment of becoming a doctor, but it is not what makes you a doctor.
We are so disappointed that we cannot come together in person to celebrate this enormous accomplishment. This is a milestone moment, one that you will remember for the rest of your lives. There will be time for you to celebrate with your family and friends; it is also an important moment in their lives, as they have supported your journey through medical school and are just as proud of you as I am. However at this juncture we need to lead by example, as medical practitioners, modeling social distancing and putting community safety first.
Please know, this in no way lessens the importance of your accomplishment. If anything, this further demonstrates the critical need for exceptional professionals like yourselves. As you transition into the workforce, celebrate each other and the impact you will no doubt make.
We will share more information soon about how we will celebrate, and rest assured, we will celebrate!
Thank you for being incredible students who have become doctors with whom I would be proud to work. You are the future of our noble profession, and that future looks so bright with you in it.
