Fifth-semester student, Chelsea Azevedo recently presented research at the 2018 International Health Congress at Oxford University. The project, “Risk Factors for Type 2 Diabetes in the Population of Sint Maarten” is headed by Clinical Medicine Professor Dr. Naira Chobanyan and includes a group of students led by third-year student Mohamed Rafaat.
The research was displayed and discussed with attendees, which included keynote speakers from the University of Oxford, the World Health Organization, and the Karolinska Institute of Sweden. This presentation has also been given the opportunity to be published as a full manuscript indexed in PubMed.
Students and faculty engaged in the project have also explored how their research design can serve as a platform for medical education training. An abstract was recently accepted to the 2018 American Academy of Family Physicians' Global Health Summit in Jacksonville, Florida this September.
