Anesthesiologist Dennis Grech, MD ’01 and neurology resident Burton Tabaac, MD ‘14 recently partnered on a literature review published in the journal Pharmacology & Pharmacy. The publication is a comprehensive review on the homeopathic compound Traumeel for the treatment of inflammation.
According to the publication, the current go-to treatment for inflammatory states caused by various conditions consists of corticosteroids and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). While these medications are highly effective, their side effects limit their use in many patients. Dr. Grech and Dr. Tabaac conducted the review of Traumeel to determine if the homeopathic compound, which targets the inflammatory pathways following soft-tissue injury, may serve as an alternative or supplement to NSAID and corticosteroid treatment.
“Traumeel does not have the severe side effect profile of NSAIDs and corticosteroids,” said Dr. Tabaac. “Traumeel also provides pain-free outcomes following musculoskeletal and tissue injuries.”
Dr. Grech is an Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology and Section Chief and Director of Ambulatory Anesthesia at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School. Dr. Tabaac is a Neurology resident at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, and will begin a fellowship in Vascular Neurology at Johns Hopkins Hospital in July.
