AUC SERVICE LEARNING & THE AMERICAN RED CROSS
WHAT IS SERVICE LEARNING?
The American Red Cross supports the definition of Academic Service Learning as “a teaching method that combines meaningful service to the community with curriculum-based learning.” By engaging in community service, students meet educational requirements while gaining key insights into their communities and into themselves.
BENEFITS OF SERVICE LEARNING
American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine (AUC) is a proud partner of the American Red Cross. Social accountability is an important part of our university’s mission and core values, and our Admissions committee looks at a potential applicant’s community outreach history very closely when making an admissions decision.
Prospective students at many different education levels can gain valuable community service experience through the American Red Cross, from as early as high school. Such activities could include teaching community CPR, providing outreach to local citizens about fire prevention and preparedness, serving as a blood donor ambassador, and more.
