Monica Rivero is an instructor in the Histology, Embryology and Anatomy department at AUC School of Medicine. She has a MSc in Clinical Anatomy, and BSc in Medical Sciences from Western University (London, Canada). Her research focuses on delivery of virtual education and development of novel e-learning tools; specifically related to the anatomical sciences. She creates interactive 3D educational models of histological structures, and evaluates their effects on learning outcomes, with special consideration to students’ varying spatial abilities. Recently she developed virtual histology and embryology laboratories, using novel web-based applications that foster collaborative exploration of microscope slides and group discussions. She is particularly interested in novel e-learning methodologies that facilitate integration of clinical correlations into basic medical science courses. Beyond her academic career, Monica is an advocate for Latin American women in STEM and is committed to various social justice initiatives. She is currently working with community partners in London (Canada) on improving support services for new immigrants, particularly Latin American adults and children, who have been sexually assaulted. Most recently, she founded the Red Flag Foundation, connecting Canadian food suppliers and donors to local volunteers who deliver groceries to families in vulnerable communities of her native country Colombia.
