THRIVE Optimizing Wellbeing Week
AUC School of Medicine's THRIVE Wellbeing Program is pleased to host its first-ever Optimizing Wellbeing Week on January 20-26, 2020. This university-wide initiative will engage students, faculty, staff, and their families in a week-long effort to prioritize self-care and develop or strengthen healthy, lifelong habits.
There will be events across all AUC locations, including our campus in Sint Maarten, UK Track Program in Preston, UK, administrative offices in Pembroke Pines, and various clinical sites. We have also organized virtual activities for students and colleagues who are not based at these locations. Check out our tentative schedule below; details will be added as THRIVE Week draws closer.
Monday, January 20 – Sunday, January 26
We are challenging everyone at AUC to together take enough steps to log 7600 miles—the distance from our western most clinical site, Kern Medical Center in Bakersfield, CA, to our campus in Sint Maarten, and up to our UK Track at the University of Central Lancashire in Preston, UK.
To participate, 1) register online at ChallengeRunner, 2) download the free ChallengeRunner app to your smartphone, and 3) log into the app EACH DAY to count your steps! ChallengeRunner will sync with the movement tracking tool of your choice. But remember, you must register online to be counted!

Join us online or in-person for a 1-hour yoga class. Put aside any stressors of the day and refocus your intentions and breathing. Our live broadcast enables students and colleagues from around the world to participate.
Sint Maarten Campus
1) Scavenger Hunt
All day; cutoff is at 5:00 pm AST
We will email a list of wellness-related objects, people, and places that you must visit by 5:00 pm. Snap a photo with each and send them to [email protected]. The first person to complete the scavenger hunt will win their choice of a spa day gift certificate or dinner for two at a local restaurant!
2) Healthy Cooking & Eating: A Presentation by FitFoodSXM
11:30 am – 12:30 pm AST in the AUC Courtyard
Join Catarina Ahlip, owner of FitFoodSXM, for a demonstration on clean eating. Healthy food habits can take a back seat during medical school but Catarina will share tips on how to meal prep, snack smart, and cook with ease. And yes, there will be samples!
3) Wellness Walk
2:00 pm - 2:30 pm AST from the Tien Statue
Miguel Rivera, Interim Director of Wellness Counseling, will lead interested students and colleagues on a 30-minute fitness walk. Miguel will give a quick demonstration of our ChallengeRunner walk-a-thon app so that all steps count toward the week-long goal of 7,600 miles!
1) Panel Discussion: My Path to Wellness
5:00 – 6:00 pm AST in LH1
How can you overcome obstacles that challenge your wellness? A panel of students, faculty, and deans will discuss personal experiences overcoming a wellness hurtle and getting back on track.
1) Workshop: Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction
5:00 – 6:00 pm AST in the Auditorium
Miguel Rivera, Interim Director of Wellness Counseling, will lead a Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) workshop where participants will learn how to use mindfulness techniques to control the day-to-day stressors of life.
1) Farmer’s Market
11:30 – 1:00 pm AST on the patio outside of the cafeteria
We will have 15 vendors onsite with produce, baked goods, coffee, crafts, and other items for sale. Stop by and sample what Sint Maarten has to offer!
2) Family Movie Night
5:30 pm AST in LH3
AUC’s Spouses Organization will host a family movie night featuring the animated film Inside Out. Swing by at 5:30 pm for snacks before the movie kicks off at 6:00 pm.
1) THRIVE Wellbeing Hike
6:15 am AST, meeting point is the Fleming Property (near the roundabout on the far side of the new bridge)
The AUC Sint Maarten community is invited to participate in a moderate hike on the Fleming Property. Refreshments will be provided. Those interested in attending are asked to RSVP to Dr. Natalie Humphrey, Assistant Professor of Behavioral Sciences, at [email protected] by Wednesday, January 22.

1) Webinar: Managing Wellbeing during the Clinical Years
5:00 – 6:00 pm ET
Melanie Chenette, AUC's new Clinical Wellness Counselor, will engage clinical students in a live webinar around prioritizing wellbeing during the third and fourth years of medical school. Join her for tips to stay mentally focused as you progress toward residency.
1) Selfie Scavenger Hunt (NEW DATE)
At 7:00 am EST, clinical students will receive an email containing wellness-related objects, people, and places that you must visit and photograph with a selfie. The first person to send all required photos to [email protected] will win their choice of a spa day gift certificate or dinner for two at a local restaurant!
