The Office of Career Advisement (OCA) helps AUC students prepare for post-graduate training by offering advisement and support on the application process to enter residency attainment programs such as the National Resident Matching Program® (NRMPTM) and Canadian Resident Matching Service (CaRMS).

Residency Success

AUC grads obtain residency positions in a variety of postgraduate training programs throughout the United States and Canada. AUC’s 2023-2024 graduating class achieved a 93%  first-time eligible residency attainment rate in 22 different specialties*.  Learn more about AUC's Residency success.

What Are the Requirements for AUC School of Medicine?

Med School Requirements

AUC's Admissions Committee considers many factors when reviewing a med school applicant for consideration. Medical school admissions requirements include undergraduate performance and MCAT score, as well as intellectual and social maturity, critical judgment, adaptability, volunteer work, and life experiences, and graduate school performance (if applicable). Our goal is to provide you with all of the information and guidance you need to explore AUC as a medical school option and make the best decision to suit your career and life objectives.

 

How Does the AUC School of Medicine Admissions Process Work?

Medical School Admission Process

The medical school admission process varies from school to school. At AUC, you start by completing an application online. Once you have completed your online application, you will be assigned an admissions ambassador who will reach out for supporting documents. What Is the Medical School Admission Timeline

At AUC, we have no no single medical school admission timeline because we operate under a rolling admissions policy. This means we offer three start dates—September, January, and May. This gives you the freedom to start medical school when it's right for you. Admissions deadlines are four weeks before the start of each semester.

When Is the Admission Deadline for the AUC School of Medicine

The AUC Admissions team recommends starting your application as early as possible. Candidates should apply to AUC at least one month prior to their desired start time.

What GPA Do Medical Schools Require?

AUC looks at both overall GPA and science GPA. AUC’s Admissions Committee considers many factors when reviewing an applicant for consideration - GPA is only one of them. Depending on the circumstances, a student with a lower GPA may be accepted, especially if the student excels in other aspects of the medical school application evaluation. 

What Courses Are Required for Med School?

Prerequisite programs' course requirements may vary from institution to institution; however, they typically include the following:

  • Biochemistry (one semester)  
  • Biology (two semesters with a lab)  
  • English (two semesters)  
  • General chemistry (two semesters with a lab)  
  • Math (two semesters)  
  • Organic chemistry (two semesters with lab)  
  • Physics (two semesters with a lab)  
  • Psychology and Statistics are sometimes required

At AUC, a bachelor’s degree with a strong science background is preferred. AUC’s course requirements** are as follows:

  • Two semesters (8 credit hours) including labs for each of the following:
    • General biology
    • General chemistry
    • Organic chemistry or biochemistry
  • One semester of:
    • General physics, calculus, or statistics

**Substitutions and/or exceptions for med school prerequisites are made on a case-by-case basis at the discretion of the Admissions Dean and Faculty Admissions Committee.

Do Medical Schools Require Calculus?

Yes, or a similar alternative. Most medical schools, including AUC, require a generous exposure to mathematics and/or general physics. At AUC, substitutions and/or exceptions for med school prerequisites are made on a case-by-case basis at the discretion of the admissions committee and the chair of the admissions committee. Math can sometimes be critical in the medical profession — think of pharmacokinetics or measuring blood flow, cardiac output, or tumor growth, for example. Can You Go to Med School Without Premed Courses?

No. Undergraduate students can major in whatever they like, but they must take the necessary courses that fulfill prerequisite requirements. Medical schools need to determine a student’s ability to succeed in the biological and physical sciences courses. 

What Do I Need to Get into Medical School?

The basics for students to get into medical school include:

  • Taking prerequisite classes
  • Taking the MCAT
  • Letters of recommendation
  • CV or resume
  • Personal statement
  • University transcripts

*AUC's medical school facilities and curriculum are accredited through 2027 by the Accreditation Commission on Colleges of Medicine (ACCM), which is the accreditor used by the country of St. Maarten.
