Established in 1978, American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine knows first-hand what catastrophic damages result from both a volcano and a hurricane. The impact of such events not only affects instruction and learning, but more importantly the lives of students, faculty, and administrative staff. Therefore, through our experience, knowledge, and understanding, AUC has taken the highest precautionary measures to ensure the safety and well being of all those on its Medical Campus in St. Maarten.
AUC Academic Building:
- Meets the requirements of the South Florida Hurricane Building Code, whose codes are one of the highest in the nation
- Architecturally planned by a leading South Florida architectural firm
- Withstands category 4 hurricanes
- Constructed with 12” thick reinforced roof concrete slabs (industry standard is 6”)
- Designed and uses impact resistant glass windows to withstand hurricane winds
- Supports electrical needs by having its own on-campus power generator that operates 24hrs. per day
- Offers process to desalinate water up to 50,000 gallons per day
