A new article in MD Magazine highlights the important role international medical schools like AUC play in supplying quality physicians to the U.S. healthcare system. In “The Embrace of Overseas Medical Schools,” AUC Executive Dean Heidi Chumley, MD and 2012 graduate Kate Essad, MD offer their perspectives on the opportunities afforded to students at AUC—and the benefits to hospitals and patients.
“When you deviate from a very standard career path of becoming a doctor, it’s pretty challenging to get into medical school,” Chumley told MD Mag. “We get so many non-traditional students, and they’re of such an exceptional quality.”
Essad recounts her choice to attend AUC despite holding an offer from a medical school in the U.S. She found in AUC “a fit for her academic criteria, and the potential for adventure away from home.”
After graduating from AUC, she completed a transitional intern year at Henry Ford Hospital in Michigan before moving on to a three-year neurology residency at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in New Hampshire, where she met multiple Caribbean medical school alumni on her first day.
