AUC Clubs and Activities
American Medical Student Association (AMSA)
AMSA is a global association that exists to support, inform and inspire tomorrow's physicians. Our vision is a world where health care is accessible, medicine is affordable and systems support the diversity we see around us.
American Medical Women's Association (AMWA)
American Medical Women's Association (AMWA) is an organization of over 10,000 physicians and medical students dedicated to improving women’s health and advancement of women in medicine. AMWA was founded in 1915, when women physicians were an under-represented minority. Over the past 90+ years, AMWA has taken an active role in addressing issues related to women’s health. AUC's AMWA chapter strives to improve women's health through a variety of activities: mentorship program, lecture series, and community outreach programs.
Anatomy Teaching Assistants (TAs)
The Anatomy TAs is a select group of students who excelled in Anatomy during their 1st semester and were individually chosen by department faculty to participate in the TA program. The TAs, though treated as junior faculty, are colleagues who volunteer their time because they enjoy the subject material and want to teach others. It is their hope to be able to pass on to you a few “pearls” of wisdom that may make your transition as a 1st year medical student a successful one.
Anesthesiology Interest Group (AIG)
AIG introduces students to the specialty of anesthesiology. We host workshops to introduce students to common procedures performed by anesthesiologists. In addition, we host medtalks from resident and attending anesthesiologists to get an inside look into the specialty.
Armenian Student Association (ASA)
ASA strives to create a safe community space for its membership through a variety of cultural and social initiatives and represent the unified voice of its members. As an organization, it is focused on providing a platform for Armenian-American students at AUC to connect with their roots, network with one another and engage with the greater campus community. The ASA executive board includes students from different ethnic groups and cultures.
Asian Student Medical Association (ASMA)
The Asian Student Medical Association provides fellowship and community service opportunities for students interested in Asian culture and all students of Asian descent. Our organization promotes awareness of Asian culture, while also serving the St. Maarten community. ASMA’s fundraisers benefit the local branch of the international Tzu Chi Foundation, a charitable organization founded upon Buddhist principles serving through charity, medicine, education, and humanistic culture. We aim to make ASMA an organization of fellowship, community service, and cultural awareness.
Black Medical Student Association (BMSA)
The Black Medical Student Association (BMSA) is committed to focusing on the needs and concerns of black medical students , while addressing the needs of underserved communities. As an organization we aim to increase the number of clinically excellent, culturally competent and socially conscious physicians.
Canadian Medical Student Association (CMSA)
Canadian Medical Students Association has three goals: to help and support Canadian students at AUC in their pursuit of medicine, to share and celebrate Canadian culture with other students and to respect and give back to the community of Sint Maarten. CMSA aims to aid Canadians on their journey to becoming practicing doctors. CMSA celebrates Canada Day, Thanksgiving, and other Canadian holidays, as well as fundraising events such as the road hockey tournament. CMSA strongly encourages all students to join and experience Canadian culture and all it has to offer.
Careers In Advancing Medicine (CIAM)
Careers in Advancing Medicine aims to provide students interested in a competitive specialty opportunity to demonstrate commitment to their intended specialty through research. Show commitment to their intended specialty through networking and developing interpersonal skills within their community of the specialty. Showcase their ability to be a well-rounded individual by participating in events that involve volunteering and/or humanitarianism and demonstrate a level of professionalism befitting a physician in the chosen specialty.
Catholic Student Association (CSA)
The Catholic Student Association is a faith community which seeks to maintain and grow the Catholic faith of students and faculty of AUC. We offer transportation to and from the local Church mass and offer other opportunities for one to continue one's faith during their time here at Sint Maarten. Come and Worship with us!
Christian Medical & Dental Association (CMDA)
The Christian Medical & Dental Association (CMDA) group at AUC is a campus chapter of the National Organization. Our goal is to bring the hope and healing of Christ to the world through healthcare professionals. This student led organization fosters a sense of community ; our motto is “we are not a club we are a church”. We visit a local church in SXM, have baptisms, have social outings, and provide a support system as we navigate Medical School here on the island of St. Maarten.
Disaster Medicine Interest Group (DMIG)
Disaster Medicine Interest Group serves the student body at AUC who have an interest in the medical aspect of disaster response. We are involved with our local community and work with EMS as well as lay people in St. Maarten with classes such as first aid, mass casualty response, and Stop the Bleed. While emergency medicine is a natural part of disaster response, we believe in the importance of a multi-disciplinary response to a disaster. This makes DMIG a naturally diverse group of individuals with different skill sets and interests.
East Asian Students Together (EAST)
EAST is a dynamic community at AUC dedicated to fostering connection, understanding, and celebration among East Asian students and enthusiasts. EAST strives to serve as a bridge between cultures, breaking down barriers and fostering cross-cultural understanding. Through open dialogue and shared experiences, we strive to create a supportive environment where diversity is celebrated, and everyone's voice is heard.
Endocrine Focus Group (EFG)
The Endocrine Focus Group at AUC dedicates itself to the nuanced exploration of the Endocrine System. EFG is committed to nurturing the growth of future endocrinologists by offering specialized workshops, educational symposiums, and mentorship programs led by experienced peers. We strive to help future endocrinologists here at AUC.
First Generation Medical Student Organization (FGMSO)
First Generation Medical Student Organization strives to bring together all of the first gen students so that we have a common place to go when seeking advice or help in or academics. We work together to help the community through our different volunteering opportunities and also host educational MedTalks to help further the medical knowledge of our members.
Global Health Club (GHC)
The purpose of the Global Health Club is twofold: to inform medical students of current global health events in relation to the field of medicine, and to inspire and encourage medical students to become well-rounded physicians who are culturally sensitive to their patients.
Internal Medicine Interest Group (IMIG)
The Internal Medicine Interest Group is a club that wants to provide the AUC community with opportunities in research and volunteering. We want to increase awareness in Internal Medicine throughout the community and provide a network in which we can all help each other.
Latino Medical Student Association (LMSA)
The purpose of LMSA is to acknowledge the health needs of the Latino community, as well as to promote the interests and support of those students who identify themselves as underrepresented minority students of the American University of the Caribbean through social, cultural, educational, political and other activities. Join us in our upcoming activities such as Medical Miércoles, Salsa/Bachata/Merengue Classes, Spanish Medical Workshop, and Cafecito Cart.
LGBTQ+
The LGBTQ+ club is a safe place for sexual minorities, gender minorities, and their supportive allies, to develop community and inclusion in medicine via social gatherings, MedTalks, and charity events.
Medicine in Motion (MIM)
The Medicine in Motion AUC chapter is part of an international organization aimed at fostering a community of medical professionals geared towards fitness, wellness, and philanthropy. The international organization has made a global impact by raising funds through fitness events, donating over $100,000 to various organizations around the world. The AUC chapter puts on fitness events such as hikes, workouts, to raise funds for a local organization on Sint Maarten. These events also help maintain the mental health and wellness of the medical students at AUC.
Oncology Interest Group
The Oncology Interest Group participates in various events, presentations and discussions with guest speakers on various topics surrounding oncology, and demonstrations such as how to properly perform breast exams. They frequently collaborate with other students' interest groups, such as OB/GYN, Family Medicine, and Surgery to name a few. Additionally, the group participates in wellness fairs and free skin and breast exams within the Sint Maarten community, as well as providing education of on the risk factors for breast cancer to women of local community.
Pathology Interest Group
Pathology Interest Group is an AUC campus organization founded to provides students an opportunity to collaborate & engage in the field of Pathology. We strive to provide a platform to discuss and explore Pathology so that students can have a better idea of the lesser known intricacies of a vast medical specialty. Passionate or curious about Pathology, please join us to learn more!
Phi Chi Medical Fraternity
Phi Chi is AUC's community service fraternity. It is a national medical fraternity with many chapters throughout the United States. Phi Chi works every semester with a local soup kitchen, an orphanage, and is currently working with an elementary school in Phillipsburg to provide the supplies that they need. Phi Chi hosts events and parties throughout the semester as well. If you are interested in pledging for this fraternity, please come to the Welcome Back party hosted by Phi Chi at the beginning of the semester.
Physiatry/Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Student Interest Group (PM&R)
The AUC Physiatry club provides a platform for students interested in going into the field of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R), also called physiatry. PM&R is a branch of medicine that aims to enhance and restore functional ability and quality of life to people with physical impairments or disabilities.
Psychiatry Interest Group (PSYCH)
The Psychiatry Interest Group at AUC explores the specialty of psychiatry and generates interest in the field while serving the Sint Maarten community and fostering an environment where international medical students can develop professionally. We provide resources and a safe space for students to discuss matters of psychiatry, mental health, and emotional wellness. Past events included MedTalks with AUC alumni, emergency psychiatry workshop, Suicide Prevention Awareness Lantern Lighting with Men's Mental Health Foundation, Puppies & Chill, Community Action Day and more.
Radiology Ultrasound Interest Group (RIG)
Radiology and Ultrasound Interest Group is dedicated to exposing AUC students to aspects of radiology and ultrasound that may be useful in future rotations during their clinical years. RUIG has also been involved in Community Action Day events including teaching children from a local foster home about anatomy. RUIG hosts ultrasound workshops and works with other interest groups to host workshops such as a central line workshop.
SimplifyRx
SimplifyRx is a club that prides ourselves on community engagement, increasing patient-physician communication, improving patient medication adherence by eliminating language barriers and creating culturally competent physicians of the future.
Sport Medicine Interest Group (SMIG)
The Sports Medicine Interest Group is dedicated to providing information and resources for students interested in the specialty of sports medicine. The group aims to expose students to this dynamic field, which encompasses everything from the primary care setting to the operating room. Their goal is to provide opportunities to strengthen students' resumes through research and connect students with practicing sports medicine specialists and AUC alumni.
AUC Spouse's Organization
The purpose of the Spouses’ Organization is to foster fellowship and community involvement for students’ loved ones while they are on the island. The Spouses Org exists to extend guidance, support, and assistance adjusting to life on the island prior to and after arriving on the island, to all AUC students and their supporters.
Student Interest Group in Neurology (SIGN)
The Student Interest Group in Neurology (SIGN) convenes students, alumni, faculty, and affiliated partners who are interested in the fields of adult and child neurology. This group was formed to educate, network, and provide a space for members to share experiences within the vast field of neurology. On campus, SIGN hosts wellness and mental health initiatives and provides students with an opportunity to participate in brain anatomy workshops.
Student Judiciary Committee (SJC)
The Student Judiciary Committee (SJC) is the student-run judiciary body at AUC authorized to investigate and mediate some types of conduct complaints made by students against other students. We help keep issues out of the Dean's office and allow students to come up with their own solutions to problems with others.
Student National Medical Association (SNMA)
SNMA supports current and future underrepresented minority medical students, addressing the needs of underserved communities, and increasing the number of clinically excellent, culturally competent and socially conscious physicians. SNMA programs serve the health needs of underserved communities and communities of color. SNMA is dedicated to ensuring that medical education and services are culturally sensitive to the needs of diverse populations and to increasing the number of African American, Latino, and other students of color entering and completing medical school.
Cardiology Interest Group (CIG)
The Cardiology Interest Group focuses on providing current AUC students with valuable connections to alumni in the field of cardiology. We provide insight into the field of cardiology by facilitating lectures or discussions between attending physicians and students. Each semester we mentor students beginning their AUC journey, host workshops where members and participants are taught how to obtain and interpret both echocardiograms and electrocardiograms, as well as provide opportunities to participate in cardio-centric research projects.
Emergency Medicine Student Interest Group (EMSIG)
The Emergency Medicine Student Interest Group (EMSIG) identifies and recruits highly motivated students seeking to expand their understanding of Emergency Medicine and develop skills that will assist them with clinical rotations. Although the skills and concepts are geared towards Emergency Medicine, many skills are transferable within all areas of medicine, helping to mold members into well rounded, compassionate, and highly competent medical students. Members progress towards these ideals by participating in Med Talks, club events, as well as hands-on skills training.
Family Medicine Interest Group (FMIG)
The Family Medicine Interest Group focuses on educating students about the vast opportunities that come with choosing primary care services. We help develop students’ skill sets with common laboratory tests and procedures done in outpatient settings. We are an officially recognized AAFP FMIG program and receive a lot of support from a large network of practicing physicians.
Muslim Student Association (MSA)
The Muslim Students Association (MSA) was established to serve the best interests of Islam, develop Islamic awareness on campus, and educate AUC students on Islamic customs and values and the challenges Muslims face around the world. Although MSA participates in community-based projects and programs to enrich Islamic understanding and very active in our daily prayers and all religions activities as well as various great events for All Muslim students.
Obstetrician Gynecology Interest Group (OBGIG)
OBGIG empowers others to learn about women's health, disseminating accurate and accessible information on women's health issues, enabling individuals to make informed choices about their health and advocating for the well-being of the women in their lives. This extends to community-level awareness, breaking down stigmas and dispelling myths about women's health. Through education and empowerment, the OBGIG work to dismantle barriers to women's health care and foster a society where every woman can access the resources and support necessary for a healthy and fulfilling life.
Pediatric Interest Group
The Pediatrics Interest Group is founded on two pillars: community service and clinical education. Students learn more about pediatrics by engaging in Med Talks with pediatricians, learning about clinical pediatric cases from physicians in the field, interacting with youth and their families in the St. Maarten community, as well as other activities planned throughout each semester. Our goal is to ensure that students interested in pediatrics will gain an enhanced understanding of what it takes to be a pediatrician.
Surgery Interest Group
Our group is devoted to those with an interest in practicing surgery. We strive to provide a platform for networking, information seeking, and to gain as much of an edge as possible to be prepared for the future of our medical careers. This group is also a basis for building a family of professionals who are all devoted to the betterment of each other as future and current physicians.
