American Medical Student Association (AMSA) 

We are a student-governed and student-run organization dedicated to giving students experiences outside of the standard medical curriculum here at AUC. We draw on the diverse background and training of our members to provide these opportunities, through the format of seminars, workshops, and forums. A few examples of events that AUC AMSA has hosted include suturing workshops, EKG clinics, phlebotomy workshops (drawing blood), case studies, diabetes workshops, and much more.

 

American Medical Women's Association (AMWA) 

The American Medical Women's Association (AMWA) is an organization of over 10,000 physicians and medical students dedicated to improving women’s health and advancement of women in medicine. AMWA was founded by Dr. Bertha Van Hoosen in 1915, at a time when women physicians were an under-represented minority. Over the past 90+ years, AMWA has taken an active role in addressing problems and issues related to women’s health. The AUC chapter of AMWA strives to promote the goal of improving women's health through a variety of activities throughout the semesters. Upcoming events include the mentorship program, a lecture series, and community outreach programs.

Anatomy Teaching Assisstants  (TAs)

The Anatomy TAs is a select group of students who excelled in Anatomy during their 1st semester and were individually chosen by department faculty to participate in the TA program.  The TAs, though treated as junior faculty, are colleagues who volunteer their time because they enjoy the subject material and want to teach others. It is their hope to be able to pass on to you a few “pearls” of wisdom that may make your transition as a 1st year medical student a successful one.

 

 

Asian Student Medical Association (ASMA)

The Asian Student Medical Association aims to provide fellowship and community service opportunities for AUC students interested in Asian culture and all students of Asian descent.  Our organization hopes to promote awareness of Asian culture, while also serving the St. Maarten community at large.  ASMA’s fundraisers benefit the local branch of the international Tzu Chi Foundation- a widely recognized charitable organization founded upon Buddhist principles with aims to serve through Charity, Medicine, Education, and Humanistic Culture. With the support of AUC’s diverse student body, we hope to make ASMA a successful organization of fellowship, community service, and cultural awareness. 

 

Black Medical Student Association (BMSA)

The primary mission of the Black Medical Student Association (BMSA) is to serve as an academic, social, and professional support network for its members, as well as a service organization for the community. We are committed to addressing the special health needs of the Black community, educating ourselves and the greater medical student community on issues of minority health and the elimination of racial/ethnic health care disparities. BMSA is a special community in which we support, motivate, inspire, encourage, and uplift one another as we simultaneously work toward achieving our goals.

Canadian Medical Students Association (CMSA)

Canadian medical students Association is a student-run organization with three goals: to help and support the Canadian students at AUC in their pursuit of medicine, to share and celebrate Canadian culture with other students and to respect and give back to the community of Sint Maarten. Canadians at AUC face unique challenges and obstacles in their journey from medical student to practicing doctor; CMSA aims to aid them as much as possible in this respect. CMSA consists of Canadian students from across Canada but also strongly encourages students of other nationalities to join the association. CMSA has events celebrating Canada Day, Thanksgiving, and other Canadian holidays, as well as fundraising events such as the road hockey tournament. CMSA strongly encourages all students at AUC to join and experience Canadian culture and all it has to offer.

 

 

 

Cardiology Interest Group (CIG)

The Cardiology Interest Group focuses on providing current AUC students with valuable connections to alumni in the field of Cardiology. By facilitating lectures or discussions between attending physicians and current basic sciences students, we provide insight into what the field of Cardiology encompasses along with the various sub-specialties. Throughout each semester we mentor students just beginning their AUC journey, host several workshops where members and participants are taught how to obtain and interpret both echocardiograms and electrocardiograms as well as provide several opportunities to participate in Cardio-centric research projects.

 

 

Christian Medical and Dental Association (CMDA)

The Christian Medical and Dental Association, founded more than seventy years ago, functions as a network for information, training, and fellowship in an effort to integrate faith into the practice of medicine. The national organization offers mission opportunities as well as mentor match programs during residency. The AUC chapter provides an opportunity for community service events, ethical and current event symposiums, as well as social events.

 

Disaster Medicine Interest Group

The Disaster Medicine Interest Group aims to provide support and information for students interested in disaster medicine, including medicine related to infectious disease, biohazards, hurricanes, earthquakes, and other natural and man-made disasters. 

 

 

Dr. Dale Van Wormer Student Judiciary Committee (SJC)

We are a student run organization that deals with student-to-student conflicts and issues related to the AUC Honor Code, professionalism, and ethics. Our goal is to promote an environment at AUC that is not only conducive to learning, but also trustworthy, respectable, and is in accordance with the values established by the medical community.  Members are selected from students in the second to fifth semesters.

Emergency Medicine Student Interest Group (EMSIG)

The purpose of the Emergency Medicine Student Interest Group is to expand understanding of emergency medicine and develop skills to prepare students for clinical rotations. Group meetings focus on skills and concepts geared not only toward emergency medicine but also transferrable to all areas of medicine to contribute to development of well-rounded, compassionate and highly competent physicians.

Family Medicine Interest Group (FMIG)

The mission of the Family Medicine Interest Group (FMIG) is to create a network of current and future practitioners of family medicine within the AUC community.  FMIG strives to support professional development, cultivate interest in Family Medicine, provide opportunities for serving community, and promote social activities for our members. FMIG is affiliated with AAFP and strives to increase interest in and understanding of family medicine through seminars with current family physicians and workshops.

 

Global Health Club (GHC)

The purpose of the Global Health Club is twofold: to inform medical students of current global health events in relation to the field of medicine, and to inspire and encourage medical students to become well-rounded physicians who are culturally sensitive to their patients.

 

Honor and Service Society

We are a non-profit organization whose goals are to promote community awareness, support education through community service while maintaining a high academic standard. The organization is designed to encourage and recognize academic excellence, character, morality, and conduct benefitting the field of medicine. Members, inducted at the beginning of their fifth semester, have earned a cumulative GPA of 85 or higher, have a demonstrated record of school/community service, and exhibit qualities of leadeship, excellence, and dedication to the community. 

 

Jewish Medical Students Association (JMSA)

JMSA at AUC is a growing, enthusiastic community of students and faculty members who meet regularly to support Jewish life at AUC. It is a student run association that functions to bring Jewish awareness to the campus unite students of Jewish and other faiths, as well as interacting with the local community in St. Maarten. JMSA networks with other religious, cultural, and political, community and social organizations. JMSA performs community service, holds information sessions, as well as social and holiday gatherings. JMSA educates students on the integration between medical and Jewish religious values. We invite anyone who is interested to join us. All are welcome!

 

Frontline

The Frontline club provides a forum for students to keep abreast of new developments in the medical field.  Our goal is to equip students with competencies related to literacy in medical research/science.  We provide a venue for students and faculty to interact, discuss and question ideas.  The frontline club also is involved in fostering interest of scientific pursuits in the island's youth through its volunteer activities.

 

Latino Medical Student Association (LMSA)

We are a chapter of the National Latino Medical Student Association. LMSA promotes the Latino culture in the field of medicine and in the AUC community, educates medical students on Latino health issues, advocates for Latino medical students, assists in the recruitment and retention of Latino medical students, inspires members of the organization to achieve academic excellence, enforces awareness of the need for bilingual medical doctors, creates awareness of the Latino culture, concerns, issues and future in medicine, provides a bridge between the Latino community and other cultures that populate AUC, and to promotes outreach to the Latino community in the surrounding area.

 

LGBTQ+

We aim to create a safe place for LGBTQ+ community and allies who have a commitment to embrace diversity and ensure an educational environment to improve healthcare for marginalized communities through awareness and training. Our goal is to increase visibility of LGBTQ+ students, faculty, and staff, to ensure understanding in the curriculum, and inclusion of LGBTQ health topics, and to develop a supportive community among students, faculty, and staff.

Muslim Student Association (MSA)

The Muslim Students Association (MSA) was established to serve the best interests of Islam, develop Islamic awareness on campus, and educate AUC students on Islamic customs and values.  MSA participates in community-based projects and programs to enrich Islamic understanding. 

 

Obstetrics & Gynecology Interest Group (OBGIG)

The Obstetrics and Gynecology Interest Group aims to familiarize students with the OB/GYN specialty and related subspecialties through hands-on workshops, guest speakers, networking and more. We are very passionate about all aspects of women’s health, and hope to spread knowledge and awareness throughout both the student body and the St. Maarten community. Our goal is to make issues in women’s health a more open and accessible conversation, while emphasizing its importance primarily in the OB/GYN specialty but also across medicine as a whole.

 

Oncology Interest Group

Oncology Interest Group is an organization where students come together to learn more about the diverse career paths within the field of oncology. Within our meetings, we host many guest speakers who discuss their career paths and share cutting-edge research that they may be working on in their field. Before COVID, we also had a monthly journal club where we would read literature and present the information with interested group members regarding a specific topic (i.e. breast cancer). The organization is also involved in the all-club mentorship at AUC for incoming students and so much more.

 

 

Pathology Interest Group

Pathology Interest Group is an AUC campus organization founded to provides students an opportunity to collaborate & engage in the field of Pathology. We strive to provide a platform to discuss and explore Pathology so that students can have a better idea of the lesser known intricacies of a vast medical specialty. Passionate or curious about Pathology, please join us to learn more!

 

Pediatric Interest Group (PIG)

The Pediatric Interest Group provides support and information for American University of the Caribbean (AUC) medical students with an interest in pediatric medicine. PIG seeks to contribute to the greater St. Maarten community through service and service-learning activities with a focus on pediatric populations and issues and to increase the number of pediatric-related professional development opportunities at AUC. PIG collaborates with other student organizations in pediatric-related events and programs.

 

Phi Chi

Phi Chi is AUC's community service fraternity. It is a national medical fraternity with many chapters throughout the United States. Phi Chi works every semester with a local soup kitchen, an orphanage, and is currently working with an elementary school in Phillipsburg to provide the supplies that they need. Phi Chi hosts events and parties throughout the semester as well. If you are interested in pledging for this fraternity, please come to the Welcome Back party hosted by Phi Chi at the beginning of the semester.

 

Psychiatry Interest Group (PSYCH)

The Psychiatry Interest Group (PSYCH) aims to explore the specialty of psychiatry and generate interest in the field while serving the Sint Maarten community and fostering an environment where international medical students can develop professionally. We are dedicated to providing resources and a safe space for students to discuss matters of psychiatry, mental health, and emotional wellness.

 

 

Radiology & Ultrasound IG (RUIG)

Technological advances have made radiology one of the most fast-paced areas of medicine. The Radiology Interest Group at AUC will serve as a forum in which its members can receive information about the field, gain practical experience and mentoring, and meet to discuss a common interest in the field. For students considering a career in radiology, we aim to provide information to help them. The organization will encourage and facilitate the academic growth of student members by hosting speakers who specialize in various fields of radiology.

Student National Medical Association (SNMA) 

is committed to supporting current and future underrepresented minority medical students, addressing the needs of underserved communities, and increasing the number of clinically excellent, culturally competent and socially conscious physicians. SNMA programs are designed to serve the health needs of underserved communities and communities of color. In addition, SNMA is dedicated both to ensuring that medical education and services are culturally sensitive to the needs of diverse populations and to increasing the number of African American, Latino, and other students of color entering and completing medical school.

Sports Medicine Interest Group (SMIG)

The Sports Medicine Interest Group is dedicated to providing information and resources for students interested in the specialty of sports medicine. The group aims to expose students to this dynamic field, which encompasses everything from the primary care setting to the operating room. Their goal is to provide opportunities to strengthen students' resumes through research and connect students with practicing sports medicine specialists and AUC alumni.

Student Government Association (SGA)

The Student Government Association is a student run organization that works closely with the administration at The American University of the Caribbean to address student issues and serve as the interface between the student body and the faculty. SGA offers resources to make students’ educational experience a success. The SGA council is made up of an executive council and student representatives for each semester class as well as a representative from each AUC student organization. Becoming a class representative is a great way to be involved and use your leadership skills while at AUC. The SGA would like to take this time to welcome you to AUC. We look forward to having you as part of our family as you begin your medical school education. 

 

Student Interest Group in Neurology (SIGN)

The Student Interest Group in Neurology (SIGN) convenes students, alumni, faculty, and affiliated partners who are interested in the fields of adult and child neurology. This group was formed to educate, network, and provide a space for members to share experiences within the vast field of neurology. On campus, SIGN hosts wellness and mental health initiatives and provides students with an opportunity to participate in brain anatomy workshops.

 

Student Volunteer Committee (SVC)

The mission of the Student Volunteer Committee is to promote health in medically underserved communities through outreach, education and fundraising programs. SVC provides leadership for Community Action Day and coordinates an ongoing fundraising program in order to provide school supplies for children through the Back to School Program, and breakfast at three St. Maarten schools through the St. Maarten Breakfast Club.

 

Surgery Interest Group

The AUC Surgery Interest Group is an organization devoted to those interested in practicing surgery. We strive to provide a network of current and future physicians, as well as present information to gain insight within the specialty. This organization serves as a platform for building a family of professionals who are all devoted to the betterment of our colleagues and our future patients.
