There are many reasons Shakira Rivera shouldn’t be where she is today. But the second-year medical student at American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine (AUC) refused to succumb to the obstacles she faced and is now well on her way to achieving her dream of becoming a doctor.
According to the most recent data (2019) provided by the American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC), only 5.8% of active physicians identify as Hispanic which pales in comparison to the total U.S. Hispanic population.
David Pryluck, MD, MBA, loves being a physician. When he was appointed senior associate dean of the Sint Maarten campus for American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine (AUC) in October 2022, his career transitioned from a combination of physician and education leadership and clinical practice as an interventional radiologist to purely education administration for the betterment of its medical students in Sint Maarten – a community in which he now feels right at home.
For most of her life, American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine (AUC) alum Cybele Pacheco, MD ’06, has worked to address health equity issues in her community and beyond.
Born and raised in Kenosha, Wisconsin, American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine (AUC) student Nyla Shah, Class of ’26, spent most of the first six years of her life watching her younger sister slowly die of liver disease.

February is Black History Month, a time to honor achievements and celebrate excellence throughout the Black community.
At age 8, Fadi saw his brother diagnosed with nephrolithiasis after experiencing chest pains—a scary experience. Fortunately, his family was able to get him to medical professionals in time but the same wasn’t always true for those in his community.
Dr. Cecil W. Cone, II, was recently appointed Assistant Dean of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, Sint Maarten campus, a new leadership position in which Dr. Cone will oversee all diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts that support AUC students, faculty, and staff.
