Eric Gyan, PhD, MSc, MBChB, BSc

Dr. Gyan is an associate professor for AUC School of Medicine’s UK Track, and lecturer and program lead for the Pathology 1 module (PGDip International Medical Sciences) at the University of Central Lancashire.
He is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), and Ghana Medical Association (GMA). His research interests include immune profiling of African breast tumours and the identification of biomarkers for development of cancer diagnostics and treatment regimens to improve clinical outcomes.
As a physician, Dr. Gyan has years of experience in both clinical medical practice and medical education. He worked as a pathology lecturer at the University of Health and Allied Sciences in Ghana where he was also ardently involved in the development of curricula for training undergraduate and postgraduate medical students.
Dr. Gyan obtained his undergraduate degrees from the University of Cape Coast in Ghana (BSc Human Biology; MBChB) and his master’s degree from the University of Nottingham (MSc Cancer Immunology and Biotechnology). Dr. Gyan subsequently pursued a split site PhD program in Molecular Medicine between the University of Nottingham’s Breast Research Group, and the Host Tumour Interaction Group of the School of Medicine, and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and technology. Dr. Gyan is a commonwealth scholar; haven earned the competitive scholarship for both his masters and PhD programs.
Dr. Gyan’s PhD research on the study of Clinicopathological significance of breast cancer stem cells and tissue resident T-lymphocytes in African Breast Cancer patients and other publications on breast cancer, reflects his passion for the advancement in knowledge towards improvements in the outcomes of the disease. His engagement in breast cancer research, education and advocacy has earned him several national and international awards including the British Council Alumni Award in 2013 as the Most Effective Ambassador and the University of Nottingham Alumni Laureate Award in 2018.
As a lecturer, Dr. Gyan is also passionate about supporting student leadership as he himself, while pursuing his postgraduate degree at the University of Nottingham, was a Student Union Councillor, Education Network Committee member, Learning Community Forum Committee member and Postgraduate Students’ Association executive. In medical school, Eric was the National Director for the Special Committee on Medical Education (SCOME) for the Federation of Ghana Medical Students’ Association (FGMSA) and subsequently became the National Member Organisation President at the International Federation of Medical students Association.
Dr. Gyan has research articles published in high-impact peer-reviewed journals. He has presented his work at international pathology and oncology meetings including the 11th European Breast Cancer Conference organized by European CanCer Organisations (ECCO) in Barcelona and the International Academy of Pathologists Congress in Amman, Jordan.
