Raymond Colello, PhD, BSc

Dr. Raymond Colello’s expertise is in the cell biology of traumatic brain injury and spinal cord injury. Along with being a professor of physiology and neuroscience at AUC, Dr. Colello is the chair of Scholarly Activities and Research Committee (SARC).
His research interests include concussion, glial biology, CNS neurogenesis, immunohistochemistry, imaging, cell culture, electron microscopy, and animal surgery. Most recently, Dr. Colello’s lab has focused on ways to reduce the rate of concussions in football. This work led to change in the NFL’s helmet safety policy and was featured in the national press and on NPR’s “All Things Considered”.
Prior to AUC, Dr. Colello served as a course director at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) for nearly 25 years. He was a course director in human embryology and then mind, brain, and behavior. At VCU, he also earned 18 teaching awards.
