Wandikayi Matowe, PhD
Dr. Matowe joined AUC from the University of West Indies in Trinidad and Tobago where he was Senior Lecturer in Pharmacology in the Faculty of Medical Sciences. Prior to that, he was an Assistant Professor for three years at the College of Pharmacy, Qatar University, where he was the sole pharmacologist in their program.
He moved to Qatar after helping to establish the pharmacy program at Kuwait University where he was a founding member of the Department of Pharmacy Practice. Dr. Matowe also taught in the department of Applied Therapeutics. He was instrumental in developing the practice and therapeutics curricula and was also officer for the continuing education and maintenance of professional competence program for practicing pharmacists. In addition to a BSc (Pharm) and a Ph.D. degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences (Pharmacology) from the University of Alberta (U of A) in Edmonton, Canada, Dr. Matowe holds BSc (animal biology and psychology) and BA degrees from the University of Calgary. He did a one year postdoctoral fellowship at the U of A before joining the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism in the Faculty of Medicine there as a Research Associate for seven years. Dr. Matowe is a registered pharmacist with the Alberta College of Pharmacists and has practiced pharmacy in hospital and community settings for over 15 years.
In addition to teaching, Dr. Matowe is interested in several areas of research. His primary interests include pharmacological and biochemical studies of intra- and intercellular signaling processes involving protein kinase C, and the potential role of dietary supplementation with plant-derived anti-oxidant compounds in chronic disease conditions. Dr. Matowe joined the AUC faculty in June 2012.
