AUC enrolls three new classes each year in September, January, and May, and accepts applications year-round. Though the program length is the same for all three start dates, keep in mind that selecting one start date over another may be beneficial to you.
Here are a few reasons to consider enrolling in AUC’s May class:
1. Smaller class sizes, which can mean more access to faculty and resources, greater opportunity to take leadership in AUC's student government, and less competition for incoming student scholarship awards
“The fact that AUC has a May semester was ideal,” says Ingrid Paredes, MD ’11, OB/GYN physician in Lehighton, PA. “I remember being thankful that I began during a semester with a small class size. It allowed me to have more interaction with faculty as well as establish meaningful connections with my classmates. We formed study groups and took full advantage of all of the resources available to us.”
2. You'll have more flexibility and time to prepare for the United States Medical Licensing Examination® (USMLE) Step 2, as well as schedule electives
“From the beginning, AUC helped me chart out what would be in my best interest to succeed,” says Dahlia Guerrero, MD ’16, radiology resident at Nassau University Medical Center. “They recommended I start in May because it would be a smaller class size, and the start date would give me more time to study for the USMLE exam. That was really helpful for me.”
3. Because some clinical sites have summer intake dates, scheduling clinical rotations can be much quicker
“Starting in May allowed me the freedom to schedule my electives and exams in the way that worked best for me,” says Kanchan Tiwari, MD ’16, internal medicine resident at MedStar Health in Baltimore. “I was even able to finish my Step 3 exam before starting residency, which was a huge weight off my shoulders now. That was one of the smartest things I did for myself.”
4. More time with family before residency
“Starting in the May semester was fantastic. I didn’t have to wait to start medical school, and it gave us a lot more time in our schedules throughout our four years," said Brandon Katta, MD '20, a general surgery resident at Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital in Youngstown, OH. "We graduated at the end of February, so we’ve had time off to spend with our families. The May class is also much smaller compared to the September class. I think that’s very important. You can really build solid relationships and friendships right from the start.”
