*The 3-year first-time residency attainment rate is the weighted average of the 2022-23, through 2024-25 academic years. For each year, the rate is the percent of students attaining a residency out of all graduates or expected graduates in the year who were active applicants in the NRMP match in that year or who attained a residency outside the NRMP match in that year. The 1-year first-time residency attainment rate is 95% for 2024-2025 graduates.

Empowering Future Physicians with Data-Driven Skills
The American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine (AUC) is proud to announce a groundbreaking partnership with the Massachusetts General Hospital Institute of Health Professions (MGHIHP), enabling AUC students to pursue a separate MSDA degree from MGHIHP while enrolled in the MD program at AUC. These are independent degrees offered by distinct institutions..
This collaboration, dubbed the "MAGIC partnership" (an acronym for the MGHIHP-AUC-Gateway for Innovative Careers in Medical Technology) allows high-performing AUC students to to enroll in innovative online courses to study AI, machine learning, and healthcare data analytics.
This partnership fulfills what current medical students have been seeking in recent years, says Dr. Shuhan He, MGHIHP Program Director and emergency room doctor at Massachusetts General Hospital. Beyond a traditional med school curriculum, Dr. He has noticed students’ desire to learn modern technology that not only helps them become good doctors, but sets them apart as “data-informed, technology-enabled future physicians.”
Planting the Seeds of Partnership
In 2024, Dr. He’s Healthcare Data Analytics program hosted an innovation conference in Boston. Among the attendees was Dr. Gautam Ullal, AUC Professor of Neuroscience and Chair of Basic Medical Sciences, American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine (AUC) who struck up a conversation with Dr. He.
Dr. Ullal recalls: “Following that, we collaborated with the focus being, ‘What can we do for our students at AUC? What MGH Institute programs can we offer them in parallel to their medical degree pursuits?’ So, that is how this partnership began.”
A New Core Competency
In today’s healthcare landscape, data analytics is no longer viewed as a nice-to-have for healthcare leaders, but rather a core competency. Leaders are now required to make informed decisions based on evidence, with a focus on accountability and measurable outcomes.
To achieve this, they must be able to analyze data related to both clinical practices and operational efficiency, such as reducing infection rates or improving patient flow. Leaders need to know how to: work with data visualization tools, critically evaluate data, and use precise insights to implement broader systemic changes.
A “Shared Commitment”
“This partnership reflects a shared commitment to advancing medical education by integrating global expertise with state-of-the-art technology,” says Dr. Ullal, who is pleased at what the alliance brings to AUC’s U.S.-modeled MD program. “AUC students and faculty gain access to unparalleled opportunities for practical learning, skill development, and academic enrichment through engagement with leading professionals at MGHIHP.”
The partnership is a blueprint of how to train a modern clinician, notes Dr. He. “We’re building a pipeline of professionals who are not only exceptional in clinical care but also fluent in the tools that will define the future of medicine—AI, machine learning, and data analytics. This model, we hope, will become the norm across medical, nursing, and allied health education.”
As an added bonus, by participating in this partnership, AUC students will graduate with a separate master’s degree that can bolster their residency applications.
Who Should Apply?
Only students who demonstrate exceptional academic ability and a strong work ethic are considered for this opportunity. If you are a high-achieving student who has shown you can shine in both the challenging environment of medical school and the additional academic rigor of a second degree, you are encouraged to apply .
At AUC, we foster a culture that supports the development of exceptional physicians. Our students receive a residency-ready education tailored for the global stage, along with a nurturing atmosphere that cultivates each student’s individual journey to excellence. The MAGIC partnership is a testament to this culture, providing our students with the skills and knowledge necessary to flourish in their future careers. In addition, it provides an unique opportunity for students at AUC to obtain their MD from AUC and a Master’s from MGH-IHP.
