AUC faculty member Monica Rivero was recently featured in her alma mater news for her work to feed the hungry in her native Colombia and help those impacted by COVID-19 lockdowns. A graduate of Western University in Ontario, Rivero is a course coordinator and lecturer in embryology and histology at AUC.
In Colombia, red flags hanging from a home’s windows and doors are a call for help, signaling that the family is hungry. As lockdowns in Colombia have put additional strain on many communities already struggling with poverty, Rivero is leading the Red Flag Project, partnering with local organizations to buy and deliver groceries to families in need through crowd-sourced donations.
“It’s easy to distance ourselves – physically and mentally – and ignore the unseen victims of this global crisis,” said Rivero. “We need to come together as humans and stand in solidarity with those in need, recognizing the outcome of this pandemic is in our hands.”
