AUC's Dr. Naira Chobanyan shares her expertise in collaboration with one of the university's community partners.
Dr. Chobanyan, oncologist and professor of clinical medicine at AUC, served as the keynote speaker at the breast cancer awareness event organized by the Positive Foundation, one of the university's community partners in Sint Maarten, and the Evangelism Committee.
The free event on Friday, October 18 at the Cole Bay Methodist Church was designed to provide information on the prevalence of breast cancer and what individuals can do to reduce their risk of developing the disease. Dr. Chobanyan's presentation included:
- American Cancer Society's cancer statistics and the prevalence of breast cancer in 2024
- Cancer incidence rate and mortality by race and ethnicity
- Risk factors for breast cancer by its origin, emphasizing factors related to lifestyle or having a protective impact and those with unclear effects and characteristics
In concluding her presentation, Dr. Chobanyan answered questions from attendees of the event. Attendees also received free breast cancer awareness literature and a list of opportunities for a AUC’s free health and breast screening.
