*The 3-year first-time residency attainment rate is the weighted average of the 2023-24, through 2025-26 academic years. For each year, the rate is the percent of students attaining a residency out of all graduates or expected graduates in the year who were active applicants in the NRMP match in that year or who attained a residency outside the NRMP match in that year. For 2025-26, the first-time residency attainment rate is over 98%.
Mariana Tomás, PhD
Associate Professor and Lecturer
Dr. Mariana Tomás PhD, AFHEA, is an Associate Professor and Lecturer in Molecular Cell Biology at the AUC School of Medicine’ UK Track at University of Lancashire. Dr Tomás holds a BSc in Biochemistry and a MSc in Cellular and Molecular Biology from the University of Coimbra in Portugal, having worked for two years as Research Fellow at Cytogenetics and Genomics Laboratory in the molecular study of Macular Degeneration. In 2019, Dr Tomás moved to the UK to undertake her PhD degree from the University of Lancashire in the field of Alzheimer’s disease in the group of Dr Vassilios Beglopoulos. Her research focus on investigating the role of the transcription factor REST in the context of Alzheimer’s disease molecular neuroscience, working with both mouse and human samples. Upon completion of her PhD degree, she was offered a part-time position as postdoctoral Research Assistant to further develop her work with Dr Beglopoulos. At the same time, she started to demonstrate and teach ad hoc for the School of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences at the University of Lancashire, having subsequently been appointed Associate Lecturer, teaching in the courses of Biomedical Sciences, Pharmacology and Pharmacy. Dr Tomás has obtained her Associate Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (AFHEA) certificate in 2024.
