James E. Gannon, PhD

Jim spent 22 years as a Professor of Microbiology at the University of Montana (UM) where he taught microbiology related courses and published peer-reviewed articles related to understanding how stressors affect microbial cellular function and bacterial community interactions. During his time at UM, he served as Associate Dean of Biological Sciences and was awarded two Senior Fulbright awards one to the University of Botswana and a second to the University of Mauritius where he worked on campylobacteriosis and gastroenteritis (E. coli 0157:H7).
In 2013, he retired as Professor Emeritus of Microbiology (UM) and in 2015 received a third Fulbright Senior Scholars Award to the University of Mataram, School of Medicine, where he lectured on regional zoonosis and parasites endemic to Indonesia.
In 2016, he moved to the American University of Sharjah (AUS), United Arab Emirates and served as the Department Head for Biology, Chemistry and Environmental Sciences. Along with colleagues, he founded the AUS Genomics Center focused on understanding the genetic basis of important human disease. He has a lifelong passion to educate and teaches medical microbiology, and parasitology.
